Everything apparently! When I finally mustered up the courage to start a blog (again), my next big hurdle was picking a name! Who thought naming a blog would prove to be such a testing challenge? It’s almost as tough as naming a baby (which I still haven’t decided on YET.. whoops!) If you’re a perfectionist (like me), this one, tiny detail can completely set back your dream of blogging for quite sometime, in my case, two years. You really don’t want to wait *that* long to start blogging your way to your dreams, now do you? News flash! Nothing is set in stone, and yes you can change your mind 3 years down the road. We’re humans, and humans change their minds so much. It’s completely natural, I promise, and no one will judge you for it (okay, maybe they might judge you a little, but then again, are they even worth the thought? No! This is your dream) My toddler does it all the time. She’ll ask for bananas, I give her bananas, but then she changes her mind, and decides that strawberries are more appealing. Do I judge her? Sure! Does she seem bothered? Nope. She gets what she wants either way. Strawberries. Go get yours!
So, let’s figure out what to name your blog. First things first. Get some good old pen and paper. At the top of your sheet write in all CAPS: WHAT. Start by listing what you want your blog to be about. What are you interested in? Fashion? Advertising? Yoga? Photography? Poetry? The stock market? Motherhood? Lifestyle? Or simply just writing whatever you feel? There are a million topics out there. Find what resonates with you. Think about what YOU would want to write about. Don’t start a blog to try and impress ANYONE. That’s one quick way to writer’s block and instant failure. This blog is for YOUR benefit, and once you publish it, the right type of people will be attracted to it. That’s all that really matters in the end anyway, right? Happy blogger, happy audience. Makes perfect sense to me.
Now that you’ve got a good idea of what you want your blog to be about, begin jotting down words that relate to your ‘what’. Try using a thesaurus to help you find more creative words. Remember what I said in my last post? About how blogging will naturally better your writing? It’s happening already! You’re using a thesaurus! Yay! Now, try adding some descriptive words to the mix! Don’t limit yourself. Have at it, I know you want to!
For my visual learners, I created a prettier and more legible version of my list (mine was more like a messy, tangled web), to give you an idea of where to start. I actually have to thank my mom for this tip. When I was in high school, I was faced with a TON of writing assignments, creative essays etc. I’m sure you can relate too. Well, my biggest setback was finding a topic and conjuring up a storyline. I’d get horrid grades and well, obviously my mom stepped in. But like all teenagers in high school, who really wants mom to hover over you and help? (I think I need to brace myself for my own girls.. Ha!) I thought it was so silly at first, but it actually WORKED. Look at me now, mom! P.s. thanks for never giving up on me!
Have a brainstorming session with yourself. Try not to rush the process, (like figuring out a name in one night), instead, take some time to venture into yourself and find what’s most meaningful. Once you’ve got something, check to see if it’s available! Try registering a domain with GoDaddy or WordPress. If it’s not available, tough luck. KIDDING! Try adding another word from the list, or switching something around. There will be something available, there always is! And if this is just way too much work for you, you can simply just use your name, and change it again once you’ve found your inspiration. Because remember, stone. Nothing is set in it. Whatever the case may be, just make it yours!
Hopefully I’ve aided you in some small way, to make naming your blog less scary. If you’ve got any tips of your own, share them in the comments below. I’d love to hear!
